About RIBApedia
Who manages RIBApedia?
RIBApedia is an initiative led by the Research and Development Department at the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Why RIBApedia?
To create connections across the academic research community. The core focus of the wiki is on topics relating to architectural research.
Who funds RIBApedia?
Development funding was provided by the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design
Can I contribute?
Yes, just create a free account, log in, and start writing! You may wish to refer to our style guide, or have a practice in our sandbox first. You don't need to be an architect to participate - but please bear in mind that the wiki is primarily a resource for architectural research.
Editing
How do I rename a page?
First consider if you really want to do this - this is quite a major change. To change the title of a page:
- Click on 'move' on the menu at the top.
- In the box 'To new title' write the new title of the page.
- Click 'Move page'. Any pages that linked to the page under the old title will be re-directed, but please update the links.
How do I create a page?
- Start on a relevant page that you would like the new page to link from.
- Click 'Edit'.
- Write the title of the new page.
- Highlight the title and click the link icon in the menu.
- In the 'Link' box provided, write the title of your new page.
- Save your changes to the page.
How do I create headings?
- Click on the arrow next to the drop-down box on the menu (the default is 'normal' text).
- Choose a heading - if you use more than 3 headings on a page, then a table of contents for your page will be automatically created.
How do I link to another page on the wiki?
1) Click on 'edit'
2) Highlight the text you want to make into a link (this should be the same as the title of the page you want to link to)
3) Click on the link icon on the menu
4) Start typing the title of the page you want to link to, into the 'link' box provided
5) Click 'OK'
6) Save the page
How do I create an external link to another website?
1) Click on 'edit'
2) If there isn't already a section for external links, write 'External Links' at the bottom of the page and use 'Heading 2' in the menu (see our style guide for reference).
3) Write the name of the website or resource
4) Highlight the name
5) Click on the link icon on the menu
6) Write the address of the website into the 'Link' box and click 'OK'
7) Save the page
How do I add a picture?
1) Go to the Upload a File page
2) Browse to find where you have saved your picture, then click 'upload file'
3) Go to the page you want to add your picture to, and click 'edit'
4) On the edit toolbar, click on the yellow square icon
5) Type the name of your picture into the 'image file name' box
6) Click 'ok' - you can resize the image once it is on the page. When you are happy with your image size and location, save the page.
Content
What content is appropriate for RIBApedia?
Relevance
Articles should be (1) related to architecture (2) a useful and relevant resource for research in the field of architecture
Ownership
The content you add to RIBApedia should be original (see 'copyright' below)
What content is not appropriate for RIBApedia?
Advertising
Articles that just advertise a company or service - and do not contribute relevant information may be removed.
Copyright
Copyrighted content - except where you can demonstrate that the owner has given you express permission to share their information in this way.
Why are some pages locked from editing?
Some pages are locked from editing as they contain information that is not appropriate for collaborative editing, for example, legal guidance. Pages are locked by RIBApedia moderators.
What are categories for?
Categories help users browse for topics of interest - by adding categories to each page to reflect the main topics covered on each page. For example, an article about research into sustainability might have the category sustainability.
What are moderators (or 'RIBApedians')?
Moderators have a higher administrative level of access to the wiki. They take a more active role in maintaining the quality and relevance of content of RIBApedia, and may lock pages or resolve disputes over content as necessary.
Copyright
I think someone has infringed my copyright - what should I do?
Contact research@inst.riba.org in the first instance. We will investigate, and if appropriate, remove the material from RIBApedia.
